An interesting post on BPS research digest about some new research which confirms The Broken Window theory of crime reduction, which was described in Malcolm Gladwell's book The Tipping Point: How Little Things Can Make a Big Difference
. Briefly, that theory says the following: Signs of petty anti-social behaviour really do have a powerful effect on people's tendency to disobey basic rules, even increasing their tendency to steal. More serious crimes can be averted by reducing low level crime such as littering and graffiti. Read the article here.
